Honey Bunny

TONINA's secret move to secure a coveted family property in Hvar fractures her relationship with her sister TAJANA. This leads to a visit filled with simmering resentments, where unspoken tensions come to a head.

SYNOPSIS

TONINA, a successful accountant living in Split, Croatia, runs her company with husband BARTUL and daughter TANA from their home office. Her younger sister TAJANA and her family, consisting of husband MILAN, son IVAN and daughter LINDA, are somewhat flippant about life and don't care much about money and status. Tonina is the one taking care of everyone, making things happen and meddling in everyone’s business. She has taken on the burden of caring for their movement-impaired mother, ANTULA, who lives in Tonina's house with her. Tonina secretly signs over the deed of a coveted family house on Hvar, sparking conflict between the two sisters. When the truth comes out, a rage-full Ivan attempts to assault Tonina. The relationship seems to be broken. Nevertheless, the families come together a year later for grandmothers birthday. Despite the conflict, they try to reconnect, but unspoken tensions come to a head when Tajana asks to buy back her part of the house and Tonina coldly refuses.

Intimately, I'm drawn to stories about communities where people can't avoid each other. Families raise questions about the endurance of love amidst individual agendas. Inspired by personal experience: my aunt secretly signed our family home in Hvar to herself. Until my grandmother's death, our families were close, but communication ceased when my mother discovered the house wasn't part of the will; my aunt had owned it for seven years. This spurred me to portray a Dalmatian family on the brink of collapse, exploring lifelong resentments and fragile relationships. Socially, the story examines petty corruption, common in transition countries, mirroring grand corruption and societal norms. It also explores real estate and family inheritance. In tourist areas like Dalmatia, owning property ties to financial capital and eases life, often leading to familial betrayal. The film questions whether money destroys love and if families are only valued when we have no other options.
