Banu Sıvacı

Hear The Yellow

Returning to her Anatolian village, SUNA searches for her missing cat, uncovering family secrets and reconnecting with her roots along the way.

SYNOPSIS

In the twilight of her music career, SUNA returns to her village, facing imminent eviction due to a land threat. Her past is marred by her sister's suspicious death, straining familial and community ties. Suna suspects BEKIR, her late father's friend, whom she remembers as her childhood abuser, now suffering from dementia. Determined to uncover the truth, she stays in her father's crumbling house, hoping for a confession. Amidst this, Suna bonds with FIDAN, Bekir's musically gifted but outcast daughter, who bears a distinctive white birthmark. As Suna defends Fidan against the villagers and her brother AYHAN, she and Ayhan rediscover their sibling bond. Fidan's vibrant yet melancholic spirit challenges Suna, leading her to confront her own deep-seated issues.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

The village where I spent my childhood was a sanctuary from the world’s harshness. As I matured, I realized it came at a cost. The traditional and conservative views of my family and villagers restricted my growth. As a woman filmmaker, I faced criticism and rejection. My journey in cinema, depicted in HEAR THE YELLOW, parallels SUNA's musical odyssey. Like me, she is torn between deep-rooted ties and aspirations in an alien world. The film explores these dualities through music, acting as both a bridge and a barrier for Suna. Our camera work and sound design immerse the audience in Suna’s sensory and emotional landscape. Static shots calm the narrative, reflecting Suna's internal struggles, while dynamic follow shots emphasize her journey. Music is a character, highlighting emotions and enhancing storytelling. This film explores the struggle of feeling out of place in both ancestral lands and new worlds, reflecting on the sacrifices for art and identity.
