Steve Against the Machine II: Using AI in TV Series Development

Banijay Entertainment’s Content Executive Steve Matthews is a key facilitator across the group’s scripted production development process. He conducted his first challenge with AI at TV Drama Vision in Göteborg; now, Sarajevo has the sequel! In this live experiment, a human writer goes head-to-head with AI. Can Matthews distinguish between human and machine-generated ideas? What would be the next steps in development? And what can an AI development tool o!er a seasoned TV series development veteran and a successful writer? We put it to the test live on stage.

Steve Matthews

Steve Matthews is the Content Partnerships Executive, where he acts as a key facilitator in the group’s production development process, supporting in driving co-production opportunities across Banijay’s footprint, and generally building out the business’ pipeline and creative partnerships primarily across drama. Matthews joined Banijay from HBO Europe, where he most recently served as VP, Executive Producer, Scripted, having joined the business back in 2014. In that post, he partnered with local teams across Central Europe, Spain and Nordics, to spearhead the development of original series and miniseries, as well as international adaptations. There he worked on productions including Pustina, Umbre, Blinded By The Lights, Uspjeh, The Sleepers, Foodie Love, Gösta; and from Banijay’s footprint specifically, 30 Coins (Pokeepsie), Beforeigners (Rubicon), and Beartown (Filmlance).

Ennis Cehic

Ennis Ćehić is a Bosnian-Australian writer who explores themes of displacement, creativity, and capitalism in his work. He is the author of Sadvertising, a collection of stories published by Penguin Random House in 2022 to critical acclaim, described as an "electrifying and genre-defying new voice." His writing has been featured in local and international literary magazines, including Kill Your Darlings, Assemble Papers, LUD Literatura, Specimen Press, and The Age. Ennis is a recipient of the Wheeler Centre's Next Chapter Fellowship in Australia, a UNESCO City of Literature residency in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and was a 2024 writer-in-residence at the Jan Michalski Foundation in Montricher, Switzerland. He lives and works in Sarajevo.

Marike Muselaers

With almost 20 years of experience in the film and TV industry, including co-leading the Lumiere Group (Benelux) as co-CEO, Marike Muselaers recently joined the management team of Nordisk Film Production as VP of International Financing and Co-productions. She is responsible for strengthening the financing of films and series and developing an ambitious strategy for co-productions. At Nordisk Film Production, and as a tutor, moderator, keynote speaker, and panel guest at many industry events and training programs, Marike always aims to facilitate and create compelling stories, meaningful partnerships, and innovative business models.
