Angelmaker
A midwife uses home-made arsenic to free a woman from her violent husband. But soon, more and more women seek her help, leading to a poison epidemic in the name of justice.
Hilda arrives as the new midwife in a quiet village on the Hungarian-Romanian-Serbian border. It’s 1917, but the trenches of World War I are far away. However, Hilda is not welcome. Karin, the village’s only nurse for years, had wanted the position for herself. When Hilda’s first patient, Agnes, fears her violent husband, Hilda hesitates but ultimately provides a hard-to-detect arsenic poison. After the husband’s death, Karin discovers the method and blackmails Hilda into a secret partnership. They begin offering poison to oppressed women, and their operation quickly grows. With husbands away at war, the women explore newfound freedom and affairs with foreign prisoners, including Hilda, who falls for an Italian prisoner. Hilda becomes a clandestine icon known as the ‘Angelmaker'. But their thriving operation faces a serious threat when a foreign journalist arrives, investigating the mysterious deaths. As World War I ends and the husbands return, the village descends into chaos. Hilda and the women must confront the mounting dangers that could destroy everything they’ve built, including their own lives.

ANGELMAKER is a 6-episode feminist western, set in a world where a lone midwife takes justice into her own hands in a lawless land, striking fear into the hearts of village men. I was very intrigued when I stumbled upon the true story of the ANGELMAKER because it happened so close to home, yet growing up, nobody talked about it. As a filmmaker, I'm interested in uncovering lesser-known stories from the periphery of society. Our story is based on real events taking place in the Hungarian-Romanian region between the end of the 19th century and well after WWI ended. There are several accounts of midwives from isolated villages helping poor and uneducated women out of abusive marriages by using inexpensive arsenic poisoning. In all cases, it quickly got out of hand, as the women started using the poison against anyone they didn’t sympathize with. This resulted in a strange poisoning epidemic that was halted very late, as authorities started investigating only after mediatic pressure. As a team coming from this region, we think there is great potential for local and uncovered stories to become internationally relevant, exploring Eastern European history in a way that was never seen before. Besides the thrill of the shadowy world of poisoning, the series aims to incorporate romantic elements and historical fiction. Eastern Europe stars as a collective background character, where a powerful new creature arises: the midwife.
