Overweight ANDREA writes slogans for sex toys for a French company in Bulgaria. Her aim to have a child as a gender-fluid person in the Balkans will meet a few obstacles, but a mystical ancestor helps.

SYNOPSIS

ANDREA, 30, is a smart and gifted person who strives to put her life in order. Andrea does not feel the desire to be with men or accept the social role of a woman, with the corresponding actions. Her mother tries to contact her by phone every day, but Andrea can barely answer yes or no to her long questions. It is as if the mother has never seen her daughter up close and knows nothing about what is really happening in her soul. Her mainstays of identity are her taste in art, painting, and her deep desire to create a child. Andrea paints large abstract canvases reminiscent of the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. In her library, you can see books by Sartre and Camus, Rimbaud and Verlaine, Virginia Woolf, Exupery, and Kant. Anne Sylvester, Dalida, cello, and piano are playing in her house. Andrea lives more in her imaginary world than in the real one. Andrea is constantly fighting for her bread. Until one day, a large company that dominates the world market of sex toys appears in town, and Andrea is hired because of her knowledge of the French language. Her lack of strong sexual experience contrasts with the overexposed theme of sexual pleasure. She is assigned the task of writing advertising descriptions to sell the company's products. At her workplace in the big company, Andrea meets LOUIS, a Cuban illegal migrant who managed to reach Bulgaria, skillful and in complete control of his life. He lives in daily fear of the immigration authorities. Andrea is the only one who manages to see and understand that behind his masculinity and determination lies a mixture of confusion, naivety, fear, and a desperate struggle for survival. Their friendship quickly transforms into something different. Andrea and Louis agree to have a child together. Through this steep and rocky path of life, Andrea has a companion. This is BABA VOEVODA. This is that great-great-aunt who was banished in shame from their family and from the village. Baba Voevoda appears as an imaginary character that only Andrea can see. The unknown part of the family legend is that this great-great-aunt was banished for her unwillingness to accept the social role of a woman. On leaving the family, her own father cursed her that her soul could not die and rest until an heiress named her child after her. For decades, the unlucky soul wanders and waits for salvation. The birth of a child will save her.

Mina Mileva

MINA MILEVA, after extensive work in the British animation industry, set up Activist38 in her native Bulgaria, together with actress Vesela Kazakova. Their first two documentaries attracted a storm of controversy and gained them the nickname “The Demonic Duo,” given by a Bulgarian MP. Variety and Cineuropa reflected on it, and EAVE, EDN, and other organizations helped them overcome the harassment and continue working. Their subsequent fiction films CAT IN THE WALL (2019) and WOMEN DO CRY (2021), described as terrific comedy-dramas, did well internationally and premiered at Locarno’s main competition in 2019 and Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2021. Both films were part of the EFA selection in 2020 and 2022, received important awards such as the FIPRESCI and Eurimages Audentia Award, and were sold worldwide. They continue their socially focused line of work with a new slate of projects (including MATHER) supported by Creative Europe Media. From their minority co-productions, the Spanish-Bulgarian film VASIL enjoyed critical acclaim and awards in Spain and good box-office figures in Bulgaria.

Vesela Kazakova

VESELA KAZAKOVA graduated in both acting and producing in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her main roles in cinema brought her popularity and acclaim in her native Bulgaria and abroad. She set up the production company Activist38 in 2008 together with Mina Mileva. The duo created a strong wave of political activism with two internationally acclaimed feature documentaries, UNCLE TONY, THREE FOOLS AND THE SECRET SERVICE (2013) and THE BEAST IS STILL ALIVE (2016). Both films deal with the recent Communist past and are still subjected to censorship to this day. Their next two fiction films, co-produced with France and the UK, CAT IN THE WALL (2019) and WOMEN DO CRY (2021), had breakout success with premieres in the Locarno main competition in 2019 and Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2021, receiving strong reviews and sales in more than 50 territories. She is part of Producers on the Move, EAVE, and Emerging Producers.

Initially we were inspired by the author of this story Anglena Rangelova, who is also a co-writer together with us. Her uncompromising humour, literary achievements, and passion for the arts. The potential of her story to take a surprising and satirical direction in a sensitive area such as gender identity where the jokes and fun have to be refined. The social and political issues in a very current office space, the corporate culture and its complete aggression towards the individual are additional sources of creative motivation. There is a clear visionary style that can be pursued with the imaginary character of BABA VOEVODA, the semi-staged approach, the theatrical feeling and the complete obliviousness of the main character. The long continuous shots that we normally work with in order to find the real piece of authenticity in the acting will be our approach here as well. The so-called semi-documentary approach in which however, the main character is prepared to stand and fight and not shy away from stand-up comedy. We’ll add production value with fantasy sequences and transformations, clear choreography, effects, and the added value of her paintings. Given the unusual pursuit and set up of this project, we’re still open and flexible about the direction it will take.

Production company profile

ACTIVIST38 is a production company by Mileva & Kazakova, also known as “the Demonic Duo,” an epithet given to them by a Bulgarian MP for their internationally acclaimed but subversive documentaries. Their subsequent fiction films have received a good international reception. CAT IN THE WALL (2019), offering an unnerving window into Brexit Britain, premiered at the Locarno Film Festival. WOMEN DO CRY (2021) is described as a rallying cry and a feminist critique of modern Bulgarian society. It premiered in Cannes’ official selection in 2021. Both films were part of the SXSW Global section and the European Films Academy selection.
