TOMORROW

Director/Producer: Khosro Khosravi

Hungary, Portugal, Belgium, Iran I 50 min

A middle-aged divorced Budapestian man, who eagerly deals with organizing his life after overcoming a separation in his big house, finds the loneliness, nevertheless, hard to avoid.

Middle-aged PETER, an interpreter, inhabits a lonely faraway house, overlooking the city of Budapest. He seeks a relationship, arranges an unfruitful online date, and later attends a public event where he behaves oddly. Peter's children do not show up at his place even though he made plans with them. He remains socially isolated in this big house until an online guest, HANNA, requests to stay overnight, via a website for hosting backpackers. She is a beautiful young girl, and Peter seems particularly excited when trying to show her his home, with the view over the distant city. Her presence tangibly affects his isolation in the house, as well as Peter's facial frostiness and emotional remoteness. Hanna is leaving tomorrow. Peter calls his son, and seemingly indirectly turns him down.

Director’s statement

Having been in love with brilliant Scandinavian cinema, I have been an observer of the solitariness of humans in different cultures, although it always emerges from similar occasions. I had it on my radar for a potential film until a CouchSurfing guest knocked on my door in Budapest and shared with me her experience with a previous host: a divorced man who calls his plants his family. He was a translator, able to communicate through five languages, but socially inept and uncomfortable in the presence of women. Loneliness is a universal issue and that is why I chose to tell this story. Initially envisioned as a short film, I eventually decided to explore the topic more, thereby opting for a more concrete, coherent and lengthier format. The film will be an example of slow cinema, without music, relying on diegetic sound. Furthermore, in terms of genre, I aim at a mixture of docudrama and a bit of fiction to make the story more character-driven. It might appeal to esoteric middle-aged audiences and, hopefully, also younger generations alike.
