Croatia I 77 min

Is it possible to be a worker and revolt against capitalism? Is the outcome of every possible riot known in advance?

ŽELJKO is the head of the union at the Gredelj railway car factory. His deputy MLADEN committed suicide after the large public protests and clashes within the union. Željko is torn between the guilt he feels because of Mladen’s death and the expectation between the workers to lead a strike that should thwart the government’s plans, ordered by the EU, to send the company into bankruptcy. The film has a three-act structure. The first part (40 min) consists of the documentary material recorded by way of observational method. In this part, the camera follows the events chronologically. The second, transitional part, was recorded at the screening of the documentary material for the workers ten years later. This act provoked various reactions from the workers. The third (15 min) is the fictive part.

Director’s statement

My personal motivation to follow the struggle of the Gredelj Railway Wagon Factory union for ten years with a camera lies in the fact that a whole branch of work is disappearing in front of us. The story that this film deals with is a paradigmatic story of Croatia, but also of all other Eastern European transition countries. Workers who responded to the first ranks of national counter-revolutions, and who in most cases fought for those nations in the war, became losers in the transition when peace was restored. Active in dismantling the old society, the protagonists of this film did not manage to build a new one. This is a film about fighters and workers, dreamers and revolutionaries, union leaders and managers, a film about the unprotected right to work.
