CHAMPIONS

Ketevani Kapanadze

Editor: Eka Tsotsoria

Microcosmoss, Georgia, 65’

An intimate portrait of a turbulent lesbian community in Georgia, for whom the local female football club has become the shelter.

At times I’m a boy, at times I’m a girl,  says LANA. The conversation unfolds in her girlfriend’s smoky kitchen filled with empty beer bottles and cheap snacks for vodka. Lana plays football in Kutaisi’s female football team. The film takes Lana and her girlfriend - SOPO, and two other female couple, ANUKA and ANANO as central characters. These girls in their early 20s form a marginalized queer community in post-industrial city of Kutaisi, Georgia. On the backdrop of homophobic rallies held in the streets of Georgia, the film evolves around intimate situational scenes and dialogues filmed in kitchens and football dressing room. Lana goes through a knee surgery, which might deprive her from playing football at all, while her girlfriend Sopo migrates abroad in search of better income.

Director’s statement

This is an intimate documentary capturing the protagonists close up in their most authentic
state. From the very first day of filming, they accepted my camera and me as natural parts of
their environment. Even if the film has a thin development line, it portrays the routine details of
the girl’s lives and their state of mind as they are enjoying their youth despite their severe
backgrounds and hostile environment.
