ONE MONTH

 Maya Vitkova-Kosev

Viktoria Films, Bulgaria/Romania/Sweden

Sarah (40), an artist still living with her parents, who did not have a relationship for the past 10 years, has one month to find a father for her future child in order to keep her life intact.

Just before the joint retirement party of her parents, SARAH (40), an artist still living with her mom and dad, gets the news that she has one month to move out. Her parents have been supporting her ever since the day she was born, but it is over now, they need time on their own.

Sarah is in shock. She is their only child, how can they be so heartless throwing her out like that? Her parents – DORA COHEN (64), a translator of English and American literature to Bulgarian, and BOYAN MILEV (67), a retired scientist and director of the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia, are well disposed. They are ready to take her back one day, but only if she gives birth to a baby they could pass on their good genes to.

Now Sarah, who did not have a relationship for the past ten years, has exactly one month to find a father for her future child, in order to keep her life intact.

Director’s statement

One of the differences between Eastern Europe and the so-called Western World, is that where I come from children stay at home, living with their parents until they are 30, 40, sometimes forever (while the “children of the West” leave their homes when they go to College for instance). The reason behind this fact was first an economic one – not enough money and lack of available accommodation during the Communism - but that did not change once the regime collapsed. On the contrary, it turned into a norm (I officially left home at 38, when I got married, so go figure). That was the starting point of ONE MONTH.  And while that story could very well be a drama - social realism from Eastern Europe is kind of trendy now - I chose a different genre to tell it. ONE MONTH will be a low-key comedy, following the life of a 40-year-old artist, who has one month to find a father for her future child, in order to keep her present life. One month, that will help her finally grow up and find love.

Producer's statement

I have a clear plan how I want to finance ONE MONTH and make the film, but I do not entirely rely on the Bulgarian part of it any longer (therefore I have a backup plan as well). We have applied for development funding at the National Film Center and we recently received it (10,225 Euro). The summer will be dedicated to script and project development. ONE MONTH's script editor Christian Routh and I, plan on revising two drafts by the end of the year together.
We will apply for low-budget production support in Bulgaria. Our co-producers - MANDRAGORA and DOPPELGANGER - will apply for co-production funding in Romania and Sweden.
If none of the above works, we will still do the film – MANDRAGORA and DOPPELGANGER will help with the post-production, while VIKTORIA FILMS covers the shooting of ONE MONTH (no budget), same as we did with EASTERN PLAYS by Kamen Kalev, that I executive produced. We believe ONE MONTH will be a success.
