A lonely mother fights for the future of her two sons, set against financial and social turmoil of the 1997's Albania.
MIRA, an unemployed mother, is living in a poor neighborhood of Elbasan, together with her two sons, TONI and ALBI. Times are difficult and Mira struggles to make a living with the little money she receives from her husband, ARBEN, who is working illegally in Greece for the past four years. Mira finds comfort in her friendship with ALMA, the mother of SARA, who is Toni’s best friend and unfulfilled love. One day, Mira meets BERTI, an ex-colleague of hers, in an investment company he is now working for. Berti invites Mira in a celebration party, where she is introduced to a wealthier lifestyle, and they end up having sex. On the same night, Sara announces to Toni that she and her mother are moving to Italy with her father. Alma and Sara eventually leave. Toni is devastated and becomes more and more aggressive. Also, Arben has difficulties at work and sends less money than usual. Mira has to deal with both financial and emotional troubles alone. So, she takes the decision to sell the family house and invest the money. Mira and the boys move in with their grandparents. The year 1997 begins and the family is facing the future positively. But shortly after that, everything collapses. The private investment companies go into bankruptcy and the social anger that follows becomes uncontrollable. The country is in chaos. Mira loses all the money and Toni, together with a group of men, break into a state armory warehouse. However, the family is left with no choice but to leave the country. Mira, Toni and Albi are finally on a bus to Greece. After overcoming several obstacles to cross the border, they manage to arrive in Thessaloniki. There, they find themselves in a completely new world. Mira calls Arben and informs him of their arrival. They agree to meet in the Luna Park. They do meet, but after all those years of living apart, they realize how much they have changed. In order to be a family again, they have to get to know each other from the beginning.

Director’s statement
LUNA PARK will be a period drama fiction film inspired by my childhood memories. It is a tender portrait of the permutations and difficulties of a family who has to withstand in the face of economic stabilities and the missing father who lives in the neighbor Greece illegally. A movement that started immediately after the fall of communism in the 90s. My father was one of them leaving my mother pregnant with me on her belly for searching a better life. It was a time that very few people in our country want to discuss or even think about now. We believe that forgetting this national nightmare still affects us as a people. We think we need to look at our own past to move beyond. As a filmmaker and human being, I find these type of family dynamics interesting because our families and our past have impacted the person who we are today in so many ways. The story of the film is not just the story of one family, it’s a story of a lot of families that can communicate to everyone in the world.
Producer's statement
My name is Dritan Huqi. I’m the producer for the upcoming Albanian feature film, LUNA PARK, to be directed by an enthusiastic and bright young filmmaker, Florenc Papas. For me, reading LUNA PARK is one of those stories where you actually found yourself turning each page to find out what would happen to these characters that we care about immensely. It is a story where I feel connected as a person in so many ways not because I have spent my youth in the 90s but is a sincere family story which deals with economic stabilities, immigration, loneliness and political disorder. As a filmmaker who have worked not only in feature films but in short documentaries and television as well, I have no doubts about the company’s ON FILM ability to provide the proper support to make this film a reality. But what we’re truly hoping for with LUNA PARK is that together we will make a much-needed, lasting contribution to our still-struggling Albanian cinema.
