In Hell With Ivo

A queer artist embarks on a journey of intimate home concerts before returning home to confront his past abuse by performing one final concert for his parents.

SYNOPSIS

From Bulgaria, a place so conservative that virtually no one is openly gay, emerges flamboyant performance artist and musician IVO DIMCHEV. While he gains success all around Europe, Ivo feels compelled to remain in his home country where he is most judged. Despite being HIV positive, he offers to perform in people’s homes when Covid hits and does so over 400 times, risking his life like a sacrificial lamb to an audience that consumes him. Rejected by his family, Ivo invites us into his life and displays the worst of himself with no shame – embracing his narcissism, sex addiction, and confrontational nature. After going to hundreds of different homes looking for belonging, he finally goes back to his childhood home where all his trauma began.

Kristina Nikolova

Born in Bulgaria, Kristina Nikolova grew up in a family of cinematographers. She left the country at 18 to study economics at the University of Chicago but ended up getting a BA in Film Theory instead. Kristina shot her first feature film (on film) at age 20 and worked for several years as a cinematographer on B movies in LA before attending NYU's Tisch Graduate Film program, where she directed five and shot 14 award-winning shorts (Sundance, Camerimage, Full Frame Doc FF). Kristina’s directorial feature debut, FAITH, LOVE AND WHISKEY (2012), premiered at Slamdance 2012 and was nominated for Best Debut Feature by the Bulgarian Film Academy. She shot and produced her husband and collaborator Paul's first feature, TOUCHED WITH FIRE (2015), which premiered at SXSW 2015 and was a New York Times Critics’ Pick. Kristina is currently finishing her feature documentary IN HELL WITH IVO and shooting another feature documentary, PROJECT CETI, about a group of scientists attempting to communicate with whales using AI.

I first saw IVO perform at an art space he ran in Sofia on a cold January night. Beyond his unique voice, I didn’t know people like him existed in Bulgaria - unabashedly gay, brilliant, and terribly provocative. My friends warned me, “Ivo’s a genius but don’t get involved with him, you’ll regret it.” I was compelled by his genius, and even more compelled by people’s judgment of him. A couple of months later, in March 2020, as I was packing my bags to hide from the pandemic, I saw Ivo doing the opposite - he felt oppressed by Zoom live events and didn’t want to be subjugated by a “viral situation,” so he went directly to people who needed him at that moment. This combination of freedom and kindness in the midst of a pandemic fascinated me. I traveled back to Bulgaria during lockdown just to meet Ivo. He let me inside his world, and I made a short film which premiered online in May 2020 with over one million views. Since then, I’ve followed Ivo for four years, ever deeper into his life and art. In a way, he healed me. I had another life as a successful filmmaker prior to becoming absorbed into my life as a wife and mother. Before I knew it, it had been years since I’d made a film. Seeing Ivo perform and move through life with such fearlessness broke through my own fears and liberated my creativity. Then I saw him do the same for every person he met - his voice, brave spirit, and the joy he brings people are reminiscent of an angel of relief amidst crisis.

Established in 2014 by Kristina Nikolova and her partner Paul Dalio in New York City, LunaClipse Media focuses on narratives that span across the mediums of filmmaking, music, and short-form digital content. LunaClipse Media’s first feature film, TOUCHED WITH FIRE (2015), was produced and shot by Nikolova, and written and directed by Dalio. IN HELL WITH IVO will be the company’s first documentary feature.
