Ge Zhang

My Turn

The film explores the challenges of disconnection through the journey of a brother and sister as they strive to break free from the confines of tradition, maturity, and their own bodies.

SYNOPSIS

The story follows SHANSHAN and LANG, siblings in a Chinese family navigating adulthood within Budapest's Ganz Block, a unique enclave of Chinese immigrants. Trapped by their father's traditional values, Shanshan, a piano prodigy, and Lang, a rebellious soul, yearn for liberation. Lang's mysterious death at the film's start serves as a poignant reminder of unrealized dreams. Through a mishap, he returns to the living, sharing his sister's body. In a shared underworld resembling their family's clothing store warehouse, Shanshan confronts past trauma and the limitations of their intertwined existence. She fights for survival, aware that only one can exist in the real world while the other is a passive observer. Their conflict escalates as desires drive destructive behavior, straining their bond. The Chinese community's shamanic ritual offers Lang a chance at peace, but at a great sacrifice. Through the lens of magical realism, the film explores themes of familial love and cultural identity.

Ge Zhang

GE ZHANG, a Budapest-based writer and director, explores bicultural identity in Hungary, drawing from his own experience as a second-generation Chinese immigrant. After graduating from Metropolitan University in Budapest in 2017, specializing in photography, he has actively pursued a career in the film industry. Ge aims to enrich the Hungarian and European cinematic landscape by highlighting the experiences of the Asian diaspora in Eastern Europe.

Every sentient creature fascinates me because they are complex, unpredictable, and hard to understand. However, through the art of filmmaking, one can project a mirror that reflects these intricate details of our existence. Cinema is a circus show captured on film. Today, it's not about “bread and circuses” but rather cinemas and popcorn. I aim to entertain while also sharing with the audience what I have discovered about the nuances of life through my journey. Maybe I can provide someone with the same experience I had when I first watched OLDBOY (2003).
