Redefining Intellectual Property: Terra Mater's 360-Degree Approach with TARZAN and HERA

This session explores expanding the definition of intellectual property and leveraging it through a 360-degree approach, utilising technological advancements. Terra Mater, Red Bull’s production studio, highlights its projects TARZAN and HERA, as case studies. TARZAN’s public-domain origins and trademark status are examined, demonstrating how virtual production can bring new life to a classic across publishing, TV, and gaming. The HERA project illustrates collaboration with the European Space Agency to create a drama series that mirrors a real-time space mission, integrating TV and AI-driven interactivity. The session is presented by Michael Frenschkowski, Head of Features and Special Projects at Terra Mater Studios, and Andy Briggs, a screenwriter, graphic novelist, author, and producer.

Michael Frenschkowski

Michael joined Terra Mater Studios in 2012 where he helped producing the feature films BROTHERS OF THE WIND and MINDGAMERS and the 2017 Oscars© shortlisted feature documentary THE IVORY GAME. Their feature documentary SEA OF SHADOWS won the Audience Award at the 2019 Sundance Film, both films were produced alongside with Leonardo Di Caprio. Their latest feature Docs THE BASTARD KING and PATRICK AND THE WHALE, ORCA – BLACK & WHITE GOLD are currently touring various festivals and being theatrical released in Europe. Since 2018 Michael acts as Head of Features and Special Projects and recently as GM of Terra Mater Studios Germany. He is currently developing & producing a slate of national and international drama projects, among them a modern and cutting-edge TARZAN series. Michael is a member of the European Film Academy, a board member of “Bridging the Dragon” and co-initiator of Vienna based “International Screen Institute”.

Andy Briggs

Andy Briggs is a screenwriter, graphic novelist, author, and producer, working extensively between the UK, USA, Saudi and China for companies such as, ITV, Paramount, Warners, NBC, Syfy, Netflix, MBC, and Amazon.

Writing over 40 books and graphic novels published around the world, he rebooted the classic character TARZAN, with a series of contemporary books. Working with the award-winning Terra Mater Studios and Unreal VFX specialists, Friendly Fire, Andy has been developing the new Tarzan TV series, working on building a bleeding-edge real-time production system so that the production can be brought to life to hyperreal quality.
