State Killers

Former Yugoslavia was a socialist paradise. It wakes up from this dream in 1968, in a bomb explosion at the cinema hall. This terrorist act is the spark of the future collapse of Yugoslavia.

Young terrorist Miljenko Hrkać sets up a bomb in the cinema in Belgrade and easily admitts to the crime. Attorney Jovo Vukčević, once an investigator of the Secret Police, unwillingly accepts to defend the young terrorist. Under the strong public pressure the Court sentences Miljenko to death. Miljenko changes his statement and claims that he admitted to the crime in agreement with Rade Žeravica, the investigator of the Secret Police. Miljenko puts blame on the terrorist group that is led by his brother Boža Hrkać.

Attorney Vukčević initiates his own investigation, to prove the truth in Miljenko’s claims. He gets help from ex-colleagues from the Secret Police: Pablo Loco, promoter of yugo-mexican music and the counterintelligence officer Rolović, the Ambassador in Sweden. They see the connection between Božo Hrkać and Croatian terrorists run by Herr Niko Kovačić from Germany.

Vladana, a journalist and the daughter of the attorney Vukčević, warns her father of both internal and external enemies of the State, realizes though that he is too blinded by ideology. Between the two of them is a generational gap.

During his second trial Miljenko confronts his former group. They all deny taking part in the bombing case. His brother Boža refuses to be a witness against his own brother, while the rest of them accuse Miljenko of lying in order to save his life. Miljenko opens the Pandora Box. The whole network of the Croatian terrorist organizations in Germany unravels, as well as their financial supporters and a whole network of terrorist cells in Yugoslavia. But the cinema bomber stays unknown. The second trial ends with the confirmation of the death penalty for Miljenko Hrkać. Boža and the rest of their gang is free. Bloody executions among Croatian terrorist organizations start to take place, while everyone accusing each other of collaborating with Yugoslav Secret Police.

Boža, afraid for his life, asks attorney Vukčević and journalist Vladana for help. In return for his safety Boža offers information about the connection of the State and the terrorist organizations. Rade Žeravica, following Boža, tries to kill him, but Pablo Loko prevents this from happening. Pablo kills Rada but spares Boža Hrkać because the State needs him in the future. Boža flies to Canada. Journalist Vladana writes an article ‘State Killers’ about the criminal network between the State and the terrorist organizations. Article is not acceptable for printing, Vladana leaves her job as journalist and turns to medicine. Pablo recruits criminals for the Secret Police. Vukčević requests a new trial, but the case that is closed by higher instances. Miljenko is being executed in the early morning in 1978.

As an Epilogue we see Yugoslavia fifteen years later, separated into a number of vassal states. Boža comes back from Canada to Croatia as a glorified fighter for Croatian independence. Vladana becomes a gynecologist; an old Vukčević defends Pablo in Hague against the charges of war crimes.

One summer evening in 1968, the famous French thriller "Rififi in Panama" was shown in a crowded cinema in Belgrade. While two gangster groups were fighting on the movie screen, in row 16, in seat number 6, a bomb exploded! That bomb was the spark that ignited the fire of the future collapse of the former Yugoslavia in its brutal civil wars twenty years later. The series “State Killers” has an anthology format – season 1, named “Rififi in Yugoslavia”, is based on the true story of "The Miljenko Hrkać Case", one of the most mysterious court proceedings in the post-war history of the Yugoslav judiciary. The 6 episodes narrative is shaped out of the court files, newspaper archives, documents from the investigative process, police and forensic reports, testimonies and trial transcripts. The themes are Biblical - fratricide, sacrifice, redemption. There is a question of innocence and what would you do to save your own head. Genre-wise, it's a crime drama, a mix of who-done-it thriller and investigative courtroom drama. Over two years went into the research process before the start of writing the story. Photos used in the Bible are authentic, originated from court archives. The irony of fate or someone's twisted humor chose the movie "Rififi in Panama" for the bomb explosion, because in the movie two gangster groups are at war and one of them eliminates the other by planting a bomb during the secret meeting. "Rififi in Panama", based on the novel by Le Breton, was part of a very popular and mainstream film franchise in the 1950s and 1960s in Europe - its title "Rififi" represents the violent conflict between thugs and other criminal elements. Considering the terrorist act in the cinema during that screening, which is a real meta moment, we chose "Rififi in Yugoslavia" as the second title (subtitle) for the Season 1 of  "State Killers" franchise, as an homage.
