Last Days Of The Sultan

The eight days after the decision of ABDULHAMID II’s removal from the throne in 1909, until he was exiled to Thessaloniki. Twenty years later, a journalist gets access to the Sultan’s long-lost diary.

SYNOPSIS

The last Ottoman Sultan II. ABDULHAMID and his family spend eight days besieged and entirely cut off from the world by Young Turks in Yıldız Palace before the Sultan is removed from the throne. Our story which revolves around these events that are still shrouded in mystery, starts with investigative journalist, RICHARD LORDMAN’s discovery of the Sultan’s long-lost diary in Dutch tailor BOTTER’s safe in Amsterdam, takes us to Yıldız Palace, the administrative headquarters of the Ottoman Empire where the events unfolded in April 1909. Abandoned by all his servants, the last representative of a dynasty that ruled for more than five hundred years does not get to say farewell to most of his loved ones as he is sent to exile on a close train carriage. His palace and harem of many secrets where he spent thirty-four years of his life is looted as soon as he is removed out of the palace. Reading the Sultan’s diary, which reveals the personal rather than political aspects of its writer’s life, the journalist Lordman embarks on a quest to find the real-life witnesses of the events narrated in the diary. In Paris he finds Abdulhamid’s daughter princess AYŞE in exile and meets his son prince ABID EFFENDI, who is working as a street vendor to make a living. Then he takes Orient Express to Istanbul. Lordman gets in contact with those who witnessed the days during which the Sultan was cut off from the world. In Abdulhamid’s official photographer ASIL’s archive, he gets to see never before-seen photographs. He recognizes the study that the Sultan made as a skilled carpenter, in the office of a journalist who has been an opponent to the Sultan. He visits the Sultan’s wife MUSFIKA KADIN EFFENDI who now tries to lead a life on her own in an average neighborhood. The secret service that has got the wind of the lost diary being discovered keeps Lordman under surveillance to prevent the covered-up events from the past to be exposed. After he meets the grand mufti, who endorsed Abdulhamid’s removal from the throne, Lordman is detained by the police in his hotel and deported to Thessaloniki on the next train while all his documents are confiscated.

SEMIH KAPLANOGLU (1963) started his career as an advertisement writer. Then he wrote and directed 52 episodes of a TV Series called SEHNAZ TANGO (1994-1997) for Show TV and Star TV, a sentimental family drama which gained great success. His debut feature AWAY FROM HOME (2001), was awarded Best Director in Singapore IFF. He founded Kaplan Film and started writing and directing as an independent producer, making worldwide acclaimed international co-productions. His second feature ANGEL’S FALL (2015) premiered in Berlinale Forum and received Best Film Awards in Nantes, Kerala and Barcelona Alternativa FF. EGG (2007), premiered at Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, brought Best Director awards in Fajr IFF, Valdivia IFF and Bangkok World FF. The film received around 30 awards. This film was the first part of THE YUSUF TRILOGY (2007-2010) which made Semih Kaplanoglu worldwide known as a director. MILK (2008) presented in L'Atelier of Cinéfondation and premiered in Venice IFF Official Competition. HONEY (2010) the third part of THE YUSUF TRILOGY, was awarded Golden Bear in 60th Berlinale IFF. His film GRAIN (2017) received Best Film Award at the 30th Tokyo Film Festival. The 35 mm B&W film is a co-production of Türkiye, Germany, France, Sweden, and Qatar, starring Jean Marc Barr, Ermin Bravo, Grigory Dobrygin and Cristina Flutur. COMMITMENT ASLI (2019) was the Academy Award Nominee of Turkey is the first digital film from the director. COMMITMENT HASAN (2021) had World premiere in 75th Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard. Then screened in Karlovy Vary, Batumi, Chicago, Pingyao, Medfilm Italy and Taipei Golden Film Festivals, earning both international and national awards. It was selected as an Academy Award Nominee of Turkey. COMMITMENT HASAN (2021) was theatrically released in France, Spain, Portugal, and Turkey. As a producer, he contributed his fellow director Aida Begić’s DJECA (2012) which earned a special mention in 2012 Cannes Un Certain Regard. The film is a Bosnian, German, French and Turkish co-production supported by Sarajevo Cinematography Fund, Eurimages, MDM, ZDF /ARTE, TRT, Fonds Sud Cinema and Torino Film Lab.

The last quarter of the 19th century, the final years of the Ottoman Empire that ruled for five hundred years... ABDULHAMID II, who has been on the throne for thirty-three years - and who, according to some historians, is the last emperor - was aware that in the rapidly changing and modernizing world, it was impossible to keep the Ottoman Empire alive with traditional ruling methods. Although the empire was growing increasingly smaller with each decade, it still contained many races, religions, and peoples with their myriad lifestyles in different climates and geographies from the Balkans to the far corners of the Middle East. Ruling over this vast land mass of diverse colors and languages became increasingly difficult. Where should Abdulhamid II start to adapt his government to be compatible with the new world? From himself? This change is palpable in the plays staged in the theatre house set up inside the palace, the receptions thrown for opera singers, his keen interest in photography and cinema that was only beginning to spread worldwide, his personal friendship with the Japanese emperor, whose country was going through a similar process, and in his hosting the German emperor in his palace, where electric lighting was recently installed. How did the changes that he made in himself and his life, the refined tastes that he acquired, fare with the culture and tradition that he was born with and the obligatory rituals that came with being a Sultan, and the hundreds of years old court etiquette? How did the conflict between the old patriarchal system and the upcoming new lifestyle manifest in the Sultan? How did this process reflect in his relationship with his harem, family, and children, as well as the administrators close to him? Then, how was he going to get the deteriorating Ottoman financial system on the same track as the world economic system? Abdulhamid was familiar with modern financial and economic advancements. Prior to his accession to the throne, he followed the London stock exchange, invested in mining, and set up farms to implement modern farming methods. The Sultan, who had close relations with the Sufis, presented a pious profile as well. Although he succeeded in merging the two worlds to a certain degree in himself, he must have seen that the reforms he was trying to carry out did not bring the desired results due to the cumbersome bureaucracy, the slow pace of officers in the local administration, the long distance between the center and the periphery, and the diverse communities that had myriad ways of living across the empire. In this context, we are going to deal with the 8-10 days during which the palace was under siege, followed by the journey to Thessaloniki and the first few days in the Alatini House. We will look at the persona of the Sultan, his inner world, the life in which he tried to merge tradition with modernity, and its reflections in his personal taste and preferences. By zooming into the inner world of the last emperor, this remarkably interesting and inimitable personality, we would like to tell the story of one of the most important figures of the last two hundred years as an individual, who in his own way tried to answer the most predominant question of our art and thought that has been preoccupied with who we are at the heart of east-west, modern-tradition binaries.

Suzan Guverte

SUZAN GÜVERTE studied in Bogazici University before completing a master’s degree in international management at the University of Bath. She has established her production company, Guverte Film in 2014 and produced her first feature film; she had worked in Zeyno Film as the Associate Producer and in the Antalya Film Forum as the General Manager from 2014 to 2017. Beyond24 Istanbul, the first Film Industry conference series of Turkey has been founded and organized by Suzan Güverte. She has attended to Cannes L’atelier 2016 with Rezan Yesilbas’s BOARDING SCHOOL selected to Sarajevo Talent Campus and EAVE Production Training 2018 as producer. Güverte Film is the co-producer of Tony Gatlif’s AVRIL ET DJAM (2017) with Greece and France, which has premiered at Cannes Film Festival, 2017. Since 2020, Suzan has been working as an executive producer in digital shows such as SHAHMARAN and LOVE 101 for Netlix, YARGI winner of the International Emmy for Best Soap Opera, EL TURCO for Disney as the only full English show made in Turkiye, STILETTO and THE AGENT for MENA regions. This experience has given her the knowledge in working with international crews, shooting in different countries and producing for international audience. Suzan was also invited to TEDx as a speaker in 2019.
