Meriem Mesraoua

Selfless

By adopting extreme measures to save the illusory refuge of her marriage, SALIMA is confronted with the fragility of her long-preserved condition.

SYNOPSIS

Oran, Algeria. SALIMA (55) is the pillar of her family: she looks after her diabetic mother on a daily basis, assumes various responsibilities in the family candle business, and even helps out in her childhood friend's enterprise. An administrative mistake disrupts Salima's routine when, officially, her marriage of over 30 years is no longer valid. Salima and her husband are presumed to be divorced. This trivial but bureaucratic headache fuels a fear in Salima, which is confirmed when she discovers that her home is under real threat. Her husband has secretly mortgaged their house to buy a medical clinic amidst widespread rumors. Betrayed, Salima fears that her husband's ambitions are doomed to failure and that they will not survive the ordeal. Regaining control to ensure the safety of her household, Salima no longer recognizes herself in the house she is trying to preserve. Her sudden diabetes diagnosis further unsettles her, reviving Salima's profound fear of being trapped in her mother's fate. Her actions nonetheless bear fruit, and when the mortgage falls through, the family's safety is preserved. Though relieved on appearance, Salima remains bitter and is faced with a new choice, her own. A new cycle begins.

Meriem Mesraoua

MERIEM MESRAOUA graduated from Northwestern University, and her work explores issues of identity, power dynamics, and the internalized gaze. Her short film À FLEUR DE PEAU (2020) debuted at the Venice Film Festival. She is currently developing her first feature film.

This project portrays a woman willing to resort to extreme measures to save the illusory refuge of her marriage. With the threat of its dissolution, SALIMA (55) finds herself without protection, financial autonomy, or a concrete alternative. In a context where limited support exists outside the family structure, Salima attempts to control circumstances by going further into self-denial, ultimately confronting her condition. Salima remains in control of her choices, underlining her own contradictions: a woman whose self-sacrifice works to her own detriment. Built around the themes of sacrifice, transmission, and control, we explore the place of the institution and the power dynamics within the family structure, which sometimes reduces a member to a role or a function; how we internalize, endure, and perpetuate these patterns. Through Salima, we examine a woman's resilience in the face of insidious forms of abuse, both suffered and perpetuated.
