CAPTURING SAMI (working title)

Adi Voicu

Axel Film (BG, RO), fiction

You may see what is in front of the camera, but you’re still blind for what lies behind it.

SAMI is a visual artist filming everything around his surroundings. He is going to a party where street protests are the subject of an impromptu performance. The event seems devoid of substance for Sami who decides to go to the real protests. Outside, a crowd of gendarmes pounce on Sami, forcing him inside the gendarmerie van. Later he is asked to plead guilty.

Director’s statement:

The act of filming is enriching and complex, but when you do it in the real world, you choose to expose yourself to things that you can’t anticipate. I felt the need to make this concept visible to the audience. Switching between the objective POV and SAMI’s subjective camera was a suitable way of achieving a narrative thread that purposely avoids foreseeable patterns. The camera takes an intimate approach only to switch to a distant observation from a tripod. The anamorphic lenses, and minimal lighting underline the idea that the atmosphere and events are bizarre, reinforced even more so by a diffuse poetic which speaks about Sami’s naivety and child-like perception. The acting techniques make the characters seem normal, so to speak, but then suddenly, they seem odd and out of place. The long takes are an invitation for observation and further interpretation. An austere tone may be seen throughout the set design which represents Sami’s inner state: an empty space waiting to be furnished.
