Films can change the way we see and experience the world. They can also change legislations, lobby for social causes, campaign for human rights, and even topple governments. In an industry increasingly interested in entertainment, where subscriptions are a measure of success, are there any new ways to finance the films that want to change the world as we know it? Four marketing and distribution experts for social impact films will share their insights on the current financing landscape and how they imagine the future of films to change.

BRIAN NEWMAN

BRIAN NEWMAN, founder of Sub-Genre, consults on content strategy, development, distribution and marketing for some of the world's top brands. His current and former clients include: The Climate Pledge (Amazon), IBM, New York Times, Oatly, Patagonia, REI, Stripe, Sundance, Unilever, and Yeti Coolers. As an independent film producer, Brian worked on THE OUTSIDE STORY (Tribeca Film Festival 2021 premiere) and LOVE & TAXES. Noticeably, he claimed the role of executive producer on SHORED UP, THE INVISIBLE WORLD and REMITTANCE. Brian has served as CEO of the Tribeca Film Institute, president of Renew Media and executive director of IMAGE Film & Video. Brian is the founder of Brand/Foundation Alliance, and a member of the advisory board of Camden International Film Festival. He has served on the boards of Grantmakers in Media Impact Funders, Muse Film & Television, Rooftop Films and IndieCollect. Brian is a frequent keynote speaker and columnist on branded content and the future of film and new media.

PATRICIA FINNERAN is the founder of Story Matters which provides media impact distribution strategy and advancement consulting services (branding, communications, fundraising). She creates cultural programs and facilitates workshops & live events. Her prior titles are versatile, including creative producer, Festival Director (Sundance institute documentary and Silverdocs: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival) and Head of Good Pitch Local at Doc Society. She is passionate about aiding filmmakers in increasing their social impact, reach, and revenue for multi-award-winning titles like, FOR SAMA, UNREST, THE TALE and ROLL RED ROLL. She also helps a variety of industry and brand clients to optimize their business performance through technology and operational support, such as Sony, Patagonia, and the Documentary Producers Alliance. PAULA VACCARO

PAULA VACCARO, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is an award-winning producer, scriptwriter, and journalist, with three decades of experience in film, TV, digital, radio, and printed media. In 2009, she founded Pinball London, a production company based in London, UK, delivering films and TV series created to this date, by established and new filmmakers from over 15 countries. Under her leadership, their films have launched at most A list festivals such as Sundance, Berlinale, Venice, and TIFF, receiving over sixty international awards, including three Lions at Venice Film Festival: the Young Golden Lion for ON THE MILKY ROAD, directed by Emir Kusturica, in 2016, and Lion of the Future and Jury Lion as a writer and producer of LISTEN, the most awarded film at the festival’s 2020 edition. She is a BAFTA and EFA member, as well as a permanent member of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain.
