An unorthodox Turkish Cypriot and a hard-headed Greek Cypriot detective extraordinarily join forces with a European Bank auditor in her fight to bring down a politically corrupt network.
A destructive accident at its main power-station has brought Cyprus to its knees triggering fierce rioting, demonstrations and an unprecedented energy crisis. A rioter, SEMELI, discovers a dead body inside the dividing no man’s land. Two detectives from either side contest the jurisdiction of the case. The high-profile family of PETER KOLLMAN, the victim, with his father being a leading political figure in Germany, brings unprecedented media attention and international exposure which forces them to agree to collaborate. By the time they concede to a functioning framework under a United Nations mandate, the body disappears from the morgue. The two detectives are haunted by their respective community’s bloody pasts and under intense pressure from their friends and family who oppose their participation in the bi-communal investigation. Struggling with deep-rooted nationalistic emotions, they miraculously make their first breakthrough when they retrieve Peter’s body. The consequent autopsy reveals respiratory failure by intense exposure to ammonium nitrate. Meanwhile, a young woman, SOPHIE, an auditor for the anti-fraud division of the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, discovers suspect handlings of funds invested into the victim’s permaculture NGO in Cyprus. She finds that the EU banned ammonium nitrate, used in the offshore drilling for natural gas, had been illegally produced by a company affiliated to Peter, operating on the illegal Turkish occupied part of the island.

Creator’s statement
I wrote BROTHERS because I believe in community. I was brought up not too far away from no man’s land. The violent division of my home country is part of who I am today. Loss and separation, the need for reconciling with our past, forgiveness, exceedance and acceptance of the other, all part of my previous work as a writer-director. Historically, relationships between the two communities of the Cypriot family transcended religion and ethnic backgrounds, but today, our two sides are so infected with prejudice and hate that we stand against each other at gunpoint as enemies. BROTHERS is a project that looks to transcend entertainment and offer a political and social story that can push people to experience and explore a problematic reality and a coarse political situation.
