WE ALL DIE NAKED

Art Film sh.p.k

An unlikely friendship awakens the spirits of an Italian bon vivant and an Albanian man as they journey through Balkan's land of legends and choose to embrace life along the way.

In the Albanian capital of Tirana, recovering alcoholic, MARK, is enlisted by his businessman cousin, GENC, to drive a drunken Italian, CESAR, to close a big business deal - a deal giving Cesar’s hotel property to his cousin. Mark is attracted to the divorced café waitress VERA, but finds himself unable to connect to her due to his troubled past. During their delightful and chaotic journey across the Balkans in a borrowed taxi, Mark discovers Cesar is dying of a brain tumor. Mark tries to find the perfect location for the Italian to spend his remaining days on earth. The duo ends up in Macedonia's legendary God's Throne, a magnificent ancient altar of stones set under the glowing stars. Realizing the precious value of life, Cesar wishes to return to Italy, but unfortunately dies in a highway accident. Later Mark discovers that Cesar has left his valuable beachfront property to him, and upon returning to Tirana, Mark asks Vera if she will join him. Vera agrees and they set off for Cesar's hotel: A new life awaiting them.

Director’s statement

WE ALL DIE NAKED is our personal expression of the often absurd circumstances we all experience in our contemporary world, caught as we are between a traumatic past and a future that evades us. Our intention is to take a well-known genre, the road movie, and subvert it into something specifically Albanian. We will use it to explore Albania's majestic yet little-known features, while also capturing the often absurd situations that arise. This journey through the southern Balkans, taken by our lead characters, the Albanian MARK and the Italian CESAR, will also be illuminated by the cast of supporting characters they will meet along the way. Their contradictory nature often creates a painful sense of confusion and alienation, which embodies the anxiety and fractures of our modern existence. Albania might hardly seem like the ideal place to seek peace and tranquility, yet the enormous difficulties our characters undergo bring about such deep individual transformations; quite possibly the closest thing to hope and redemption we can express at this point in our country’s path. As a creative team, we continually draw inspiration from the sum history of Albanian culture. For us, it is of crucial importance to pay homage to all that has come before. It is this heritage that helps us understand how art and life intersect. That's why one theme that will continue from our award-winning feature debut film Bota will be the references to classic Albanian music and most of all, to the cinema from the old Kinostudio era. This will include the casting of iconic Albanian character actors such as Mirush Kabashi and Eva Alikaj. It is vital for us to establish these associations that Albanian audiences have with the beloved presences of this country’s cinema. The camera in We All Die Naked will be unsteady, quick, and chaotic at times, to better manifest the spiritual journey experienced by our main characters, Mark and Cesar, travelling across the Balkan's legendary lush and vivid landscape.

I’m Enea Gramo, the producer behind the upcoming feature film project WE ALL DIE NAKED. I believe that the years I have spent in the regional motion picture industry have given me the required know-how and networking ability to properly contribute to pushing a film forward into completion. For the past few years, I have carefully searched for a meaningful and promising story to produce. The two directors and myself firmly believe that the elements in this project give the film distinct commercial possibilities along with a high chance of establishing regional partnerships. We hope our joint approach we have used thus far will lend itself to every phase of the project, not only in the writing but also in the choices we will make in casting, cinematography and editing. Our team is firmly convinced that this script’s mix of drama and entertainment, wrapped in the road movie genre, gives the project crossover potential of festival and commercial success.
