The Cabinet

Živilė Mičiulytė

Film Jam, Lithuania

Two investigative journalists, their closed closet office, and the monotonous and nervous routine of their work - the concept of truth is becoming increasingly complex in these post-truth times.

The two investigative journalists work segregated from others in an isolated office as if in a cabinet. Their research examines corruption of politicians, suspicious ties between the Prime Minister and businessmen, they fight for media freedom, which authorities are trying little by little to consistently restrict. The boundaries between truth and falsehood begin to rub. Journalists experience betrayal of a colleague, the office becomes sweltering and unpleasant. It’s hard, nervous and stressful work and sometimes it may seem pointless, but it’s necessary for society. Indifference otherwise can have sad consequences.

 Director’s statement

For me, it’s important that people could see the work of journalists from the inside and could understand that it is important to have free media. Especially on these days, when politicians try to provoke people against journalists. The concept of post-truth is also important in this work. Post-truth society is relating to circumstances in which people respond more to feelings and beliefs than to facts. I believe that strong investigative journalism (when facts are more important than emotions) can help to combat post-truth itself and all politicians who manipulate post-truth facts. I chose the observational documentary, because I want to allow viewers to observe the work of journalists by themselves.
