Three miles to the end of the world

A gay teenager living in a small village in the Danube Delta is trapped in the local conservative community. Unfortunately for him, his loving parents prove they are part of that community, too.
ADI is a 17-year-old teenager in a poor village in the Danube Delta, who lives and studies in a bigger city during school-time. He comes back in the village for the summer vacation and he falls in love with RAZVAN, a student from Bucharest vacationing for a few days in the Delta. One night, after spending time and walking around together, Adi is beaten up and left unconscious in the middle of the road by two other teenagers that live the village. The reason is: the two boys kissed and held hands. Being confronted with the truth about their son, their parents express themselves differently. For the mother, being gay means one is being possessed by the Devil and one needs church, priest and exorcism; for the father, being gay is bluntly unacceptable. That also stands for the vast majority of the people in the village that think there is such a sin to be gay when there are many beautiful girls in the world. And that leaves Adi with only one solution.

Director’s statement
The starting point for this script is the theme of captivity (physical and psychological) within the paradox of the family. Rephrased into the context of sexual orientation, my questions see rural relationships between man-God, parent-child, man-society, religion-man, law-society, and law-man. Unfortunately for our society, the dogmas were adopted ad-litteram and are transmitted through generations, well implemented into the collective mind: the child is protected by his family as long as he does not embarrass the family in the eyes of the others; the church provides moral support for everyone but its support ends when the dogma comes prior; the citizen is protected by law as long as the law enforcement’s interest remains untouched. Once again in my script, the moral dilemma is transferred to the audience, as I am not offering a resolution of my own.
Producer’s statement
Director Parvu and myself teamed up for his debut feature MEDA OR THE NOT SO BRIGHT SIDE OF THINGS, back in 2017, a film independently produced, and for the second feature MIKADO (2021), an international co-production. The collaboration for THREE KILOMETRES TO THE END OF THE WORLD came naturally, from the early stage of script writing, when only the main idea of the film was shaped. The script is now more actual than ever, in a world that fights against discrimination, homophobia or racism. In Romania, we still have a lot of work to do when it comes to homophobia and violence within the family. Statistics talk better about facts in our country: 62% of children and teenagers admit they were victims of violence in the family; while 7 out of 10 gay teenagers feel unsafe in their own schools. The film also delves into family ties and relationships, acceptance and understanding, ultimately into love within a family- a recurrent, sensitive and inspiring theme for director Parvu so far.
